Symphony Group joins Energy House 2.0 project at the University of Salford

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Symphony Group has announced its involvement in the Energy House 2.0 project at the University of Salford.
The fitted kitchen, bathroom and bedroom furniture manufacturer will collaborate with housebuilders Barratt, Bellway and Saint-Gobain in the largest test and research facility of its kind, which will help to design the houses of the future and drive sustainability and energy efficiency.
The build industry accounts for 40% of the UK’s carbon footprint. To make achieving net zero possible, there has to be a change in the design of new buildings and the Energy House 2.0 project provides a controlled environment to test building materials, fittings and heating methods in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures.
The test facility holds two detached houses, the eHome2 constructed by Saint-Gobain and Barratt Developments, and the Future Home by Bellway, and Symphony has installed kitchens in both.
The Hacienda Grey Driftwood kitchen in eHome2 features doors made from 100% recycled board, legs from 100% recycled plastic and cabinets crafted from a minimum of 50% recycled material. Symphony’s ‘cam and dowel’ manufacturing method also helps to reduce waste, allowing any component to be replaced rather than the whole cabinet.
The Future Home features the Symphony New York kitchen, which, like all its timber-based products, is made of material from well-managed FSC® certified forests, and also features cabinets made from a minimum of 50% recycled material. The brand also uses water-based paint for all its paint-to-order cabinet doors.
George Burtoft, sustainability analyst at Symphony Group, said: “We’re delighted that Symphony was chosen to supply the kitchens for this project. It is testament to our commitment to ensure sustainability runs through every aspect of our business and we are establishing an important reputation for this amongst the UK’s leading housebuilders.”
