London Mayor backs McLaren Construction’s selection to deliver new Passivhaus homes in Ealing – Show House

McLaren Construction has been appointed by Ealing Council to deliver 188 new homes in Acton, Ealing as part of a new development at the Steyne estate.
The new homes will be spread across three buildings: an eight-storey older adults development with 71 London Affordable Rent (LAR) units; a 20-storey residential tower providing 111 units (90 of which are shared ownership homes); and a four-storey family block providing six larger flats. The LAR and shared ownership homes will be delivered utilising more than £16million of grant funding from the Greater London Authority (GLA).
McLaren has partnered with Beyond Carbon to integrate Passivhaus design for 71 out of the 188 new homes, meeting the highest standards in sustainability to promote low-carbon living for all residents and reduce fuel poverty. McLaren estimates that Passivhaus design principles will help reduce energy consumption in the 71 homes by an estimated 70%.
The new development proposals also include 78sqm of community space, which will be shared with the current residents on the site in the neighbouring Rufford and Moreton Towers. The new development plans will also see the improvement of the existing two residential towers on-site by renewing the undercrofts and entrances.
Darren Gill, London region managing director at McLaren Construction, said: “Lexden and Steyne Road will be an exciting new community-focused development in Acton and we’re delighted to be able to include Passivhaus design for sustainable living on this scheme. Integrating affordability and multi-generational living on the same project is visionary from Ealing Council and we look forward to bringing this to life.”
Cllr Shital Manro, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for good growth and new homes, said: “London’s affordable housing crisis has left many hardworking people without a place to call their own. We are helping to tackle the crisis by delivering one of London’s biggest council homebuilding programmes. We’re delighted that work is now underway at Lexden Road, where we will continue to work in partnership to build a vibrant community that brings different generations together.”

This important multi-generational housing scheme will be built to the highest energy efficiency standards, helping residents out of fuel poverty and cutting carbon emissions at a time when bills are rising and action against climate change is urgently needed. This forms a key part of the Mayor’s plan to build a better London for everyone – one that is greener, fairer and more prosperous for all.”
