Bewley Homes wins appeal to build 270 new homes near Newbury

Bewley Homes has successfully gained planning permission for 270 homes at its Watermill Bridge site near Newbury, Berkshire after its application was initially turned down.
The decision means that Bewley will commence with building the first 82 homes with detailed planning permission and will start consultation on details for the remaining 188 units in the coming months.
Permission was granted following a planning inquiry, after the refusal of the application by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council last year. The Inspector gave significant weight in his decision to the provision of both market and affordable housing in the face of the council’s failure to maintain a minimum five-year supply of new housing.
The scheme will provide significant benefits to the local area including 108 affordable homes to help towards meeting the needs of over 5,000 families on the local housing register. Furthermore, the approved scheme includes a convenience store, community building, healthcare facility and homes for older people providing huge benefits to the wider community.
Further to the built benefits of the scheme, through the redevelopment of the site, Bewley Homes is committed to providing over 20% increase in biodiversity. This will be delivered through large-scale public open space in the form of a riverside park, ponds, allotment gardens, and children’s play spaces. As part of the development, Bewley Homes will deliver a 2km segregated footway and cycleway from the site to join the existing network in central Newbury.
